At the beginning of March, I was a little scared by the heat that descended on the island. There were a few really hot days and I even opened the swimming season. But fortunately the weather has normalized and is now quite cool. This is pleasing, because you can walk long distances and do yoga in the morning – before the flies have even landed. It was a rather long weekend, since April 1 is a public holiday in Cyprus.
On this day, the country celebrates the Day of the Beginning of the National Liberation Struggle against the British colonialists. On April 1, 1955, the “National Organization of Cypriot Fighters for Independence” (EOKA) entered the active phase of the struggle. The Cypriot resistance was led by a retired officer of the Greek army, Georgios Grivas.
On this day 70 years ago, a series of riots, anti-British demonstrations and clashes between the British military and the island’s civilian population began in Cyprus. The Cypriots’ struggle for freedom was crowned with success only in 1960, when the island gained independence. Tuesday, April 1, is an official holiday in Cyprus. Shops and supermarkets are closed on this day. Only bakeries and small kiosks are open. Shops in shopping malls are closed, but restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues will continue to operate. On April 1, children and adults bring fresh flowers to the graves and monuments to the heroes who died for the freedom of Cyprus.
