How nice to travel and create an idea for yourself about that country, city or just a monument that meets on your way. How nice to be able to compare. My trip through Turkey was very informative and I want to mention, of course, from the first and maybe a subjective look-I liked it!
It is felt in everything that the economy of the country is developing, the cities are well-groomed, everywhere there is a construction! I congratulate the Turkish citizens!

Istanbul is an ancient city with a rich history.

City legends.

Istanbul is known as the City of Seven Hills. But this is not a geographically correct definition. The hills of the ancient peninsula were originally described by the Byzantines, who drew inspiration from the seven hills of Rome. So in fact Rome, not Istanbul, was founded on seven hills. When Constantine the Great transferred the capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Istanbul, he adapted the tale of the seven hills to this city, as well as to many institutions and foundations. Thus, the high places around the Golden Horn were declared the seven hills of Istanbul. These hills were decorated by the Byzantines with temples, palaces and forums. Mosques were first built in the city after the Ottoman conquest in 1453.
Where are the seven hills of Istanbul located? These seven hills, which were clearly visible before the city was influenced by modern architecture, are located inside a wall called “real Istanbul” or “historical Istanbul”. Let’s take a look at the Seven Hills of Istanbul.
Hill 1 – Saraiburnu
From Cape Seraglio, the first hill on which the ancient city of Byzantium was built, extends the entire region where the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace live.
The area is located at the very end of the old peninsula, has a height of about 40 meters. Here the conqueror of Istanbul Fatih Sultan Mehmet built his palace. Thereafter, Topkapi Palace was the epicenter of an empire spanning three continents for 400 years. Anyone who has not been to Topkapi Palace cannot understand either Istanbul or the Ottoman Empire.
Hill 2 – Chamberlitash
The Nuruosmaniye Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and the Column of Constantine are located on the second hill. A rather wide valley, which originates from Babiali in the east of Eminonu, separates the second hill from the first hill. From Beyazit to Sultanahmet one can see a huge round column known as Chamberlitash or the Column of Constantine. It is well known that during the Roman and Byzantine eras, the Constantinople Forum, which served as the political and commercial center of the city, was built on the site of Chamberlitas.
Hill 3 – Suleymaniye Mosque
Istanbul University, Bayezid II Mosque and Suleymaniye Mosque are currently located on the third hill. The southern slopes of the hill descend to Kumkapi and Lange. The Suleymaniye Mosque is considered to be the project of the apprentice of the outstanding architect Mimar Sinan. It is named after Suleiman, the sultan who ruled during the heyday of the Empire’s dominance.
Hill 4 – Fatih Mosque
The fourth hill, which once housed the Church of the Holy Apostles and later the Fatih Mosque, drops somewhat steeply towards Aksaray in the south and the Golden Horn in the north. The Church of the Holy Apostles was the second most important church in the city during the Byzantine era after the Hagia Sophia. In addition, there is a cemetery where Byzantine emperors are buried. The ruined cathedral was replaced with a mosque and the Fatih complex after the capture of the city.
Hill 5 – Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque
The Sultan Selim Mosque is located on the fifth hill. A valley descending west to Balat on the banks of the Golden Horn separates the fifth and sixth hills. This hill, rising above Balat, is located on the rocky slopes of the Golden Horn. The building of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is nearby and is located in a historically non-Muslim area with many churches and synagogues around. It is structured as a complex and contains many educational institutions such as the Fatih and Suleymaniye mosques. Here is the octagonal mausoleum of Sultan Selim. A white mantle can be seen at the bedside of the Sultan’s coffin.
Hill 6 – Mihrimah Sultan Mosque
The districts of Edirnekapi and Ayvansaray are located on the sixth hill. Its gentle slopes run along the perimeter of the fortress walls. The walls of Theodosius surrounding the old city are not far from this hill, which is the highest point of the peninsula. It is located in the Edirnekapı district of Karagumruk. Here is the Mihrimah Sultan Mimar Sinan Mosque, which he built for the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent.
Hill 7 – Kochamustafapasa Hill
The seventh hill, often called “dry hill” or Xrolophos in Byzantine times, extends from Aksaray to the Theodosian Walls and the Sea of Marmara. Having three vertices, it forms a triangle with vertices in Topkapı, Aksaray and Yedikule. This is a wide hill. Unlike the other six hills, Kochamustafapasa Hill is located close to the Sea of Marmara. The Kochamustafapasha hill, over 60 meters above sea level, located between the Cherrahpasa and Samatya regions, extends from the Aksaray region to the Theodosian Walls and the Sea of Marmara.
