Carissa macrocarpa is a shrub that grows in the tropics and southern Africa. It is widely known as a natal plum – I don’t know what the word – natal means. In South Africa, they it called a big num-num. Among the Zulus, as well as among the Bantu tribes of Uganda, it is called amatungulu or umthungulu obomvu. In Afrikaans, this fruit is called noem-noem.
Karissa tolerates salty winds well, which makes it well adapted to coastal areas. This plant is usually found in the coastal scrub of the Eastern Cape and Natal.
It has shiny dark green leaves and snow-white flowers, the aroma of which intensifies at night. Like other species, Carissa is a prickly evergreen shrub containing latex. They bloom for months. Decorative plump, round, crimson fruits appear in summer and fall (autumn) simultaneously with flowering. In temperate coastal areas, fruits appear around the clock. The fruits can be eaten immediately or made into pies, jams, jellies and sauces. Some argue that the plant is poisonous in general, except for the fruits. However, this statement is a myth, possibly based on the similarity with other plants with milky juice.

Dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton and Rose) is a climbing type of cactus, which received worldwide recognition first as an ornamental plant, and then as a fruit crop. Its fruits are the most beautiful in the Cactaceae family, with bright red skin dotted with green scales and white or red flesh with tiny black seeds. The flower is so beautiful that it was nicknamed “Noble Woman” or “Queen of the Night”. The juicy pulp of the fruit is pleasant to the taste. It has established itself well as a new culture in Australia, China, Israel, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Taiwan and Vietnam. In Vietnam, it has become the main export product and costs more than even durian, the “king of fruits” in Southeast Asia.
