Christmas. Odessa Maritime Art Gallery 2003-2004
When I created new projects, I honestly enjoyed it a lot.
I felt what the movie director most likely should feel. This time I decided to turn the gallery into a real nativity scene. And I did it.
Since ancient times, in many countries of Europe at Christmas it was customary to establish a day nursery in the middle of the church with figures of the Virgin, baby, shepherd, donkey, and bull. Gradually, this custom grew into a kind of theatrical action, which told with the help of dolls the famous gospel legends about the birth of Jesus Christ, the worship of the Magi and the cruel king Herod.
When the Christmas custom went beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church, it acquired the name Nativity Scene.(I’m not sure in right translation)
It was a puppet theater. Imagine a box divided inside into two floors. On top of the drawer ended with a roof, its open side was facing the public.
On the roof is a bell tower. A candle was placed on it behind the glass, which burned during the performance, giving the action a magical, mysterious character. Puppets for the nativity theater were made of wood or rags and attached to a rod. The puppeteer held the bottom of the rod, so the dolls moved and even turned. The puppeteer himself was hidden behind a box.
On the upper floor of the den, biblical stories were played out, on the lower floor – everyday ones: every day, comedic, and sometimes social. And the set of dolls for the lower floor was usual: men, women, hell, gypsies, gendarme, and a simple man always turned out to be more cunning and smarter than the gendarme.
So I decided to turn the gallery into a nativity scene. On the top floor, there was an exhibition of the icons of the Orthodox diocese Museum of the Odessa, Theological Seminary and the Odessa Museum of Local Lore, exhibits of the Odessa Regional Puppet Theater and the Grekov Art and Theater School.
Everyone came to a regular exhibition and after the opening speeches ended, the lighting in the gallery was turned off at my command and the puppet theater actors unexpectedly filled the lower floor with their booth. It was beautiful and I was absolutely happy with my directorial find and its implementation!

Рождественский вертеп.
Когда я создавала новые проекты, я честно сказать, получала огромное удовольствие.
Я чувствовала то, что вероятнее всего должен чувствовать режиссер. В это раз я задумала превратить галерею в настоящий вертеп. И у меня это получилось.
Что такое вертеп-
С давних времен во многих странах Европы на Рождество было принято устанавливать посреди церкви ясли с фигурками Богородицы, младенца, пастуха, осла и быка. Постепенно этот обычай перерос в некое театральное действо, которое рассказывало с помощью кукол известные евангельские легенды о рождении Иисуса Христа, поклонении ему волхвов и о жестоком царе Ироде.
Когда рождественский обычай вышел за пределы католического храма, он приобрел название вертеп
Это был кукольный театр. Представьте себе ящик, разделенный внутри на два этажа. Сверху ящик заканчивался крышей, открытая сторона его была обращена к публике. На крыше — колокольня. На ней за стеклом ставили свечу, которая горела во время представления, придавая действию волшебный, таинственный характер. Кукол для вертепного театра делали из дерева или из тряпок и прикрепляли к стержню. Нижнюю часть стержня держал кукловод, поэтому куклы двигались и даже поворачивались. Сам кукловод был скрыт за ящиком.
На верхнем этаже вертепа разыгрывались библейские сюжеты, на нижнем — житейские: бытовые, комедийные, порой социальные. И набор кукол для нижнего этажа был обычным: мужики, бабы, черт, цыган, жандарм, причем простой мужик всегда оказывался хитрее и умнее жандарма.
Таким образом я решила превратить в вертеп галерею. На верхнем этаже была выставка икон Храма музея Одесской духовной семинарии и Одесского краеведческого музея, экспонаты Одесского областного театра кукол и Художественно-театрального училища им.Грекова.
Все пришли на обычную выставку и после того, как закончились вступительные речи, по моей команде отключили освещение в галерее и нижний этаж неожиданно заполнили актеры кукольного театра со своим балаганом. Это было прекрасно и я была абсолютно счастлива своей режиссерской находкой и ее воплощением в действие!
В презентации выставки приняли участие артисты Одесского театра кукол под руководством главного режиссера театра, заслуженного деятеля искусств Украины Е.Ю. Гиммельфарба
