Legend of the constellation Pleiades.
In my last post, I told you about an unforgettable meeting with Marie Theron and her husband Philipp, and how Philipp introduced us to the sky of the Southern Hemisphere and talked about the Pleiades constellation. I think it will be interesting for you to hear the legend itself.
The Pleiades are sisters from Greek mythology and there were seven of them: Alcyone, Keleno, Maya, Merope, Asterope, Taygeta and Electra.
They were the daughters of the titan Atlanta and his wife Pleione. According to their father, the Pleiades were called Atlantis
The Pleiades were Artemis’s companions, her escort.
Subsequently, they were turned by Zeus into stars – the constellation of the Pleiades and began to be considered as celestial nymphs.
According to the myth, the hunter Orion began to pursue the Pleiades sisters. The Pleiades, fleeing from his persecution, appealed to the gods for protection. To protect them, Zeus turned them into pigeons that Zeus had to wear ambrosia. When the pigeons flew past the colliding floating cliffs of the Plankts, one of the pigeons died, and Zeus revived him.
However, this did not help to get rid of Orion, he did not stop his pursuit. Then Zeus turned the Pleiades into stars and placed them in the sky in the constellation Taurus, and Orion, as punishment for his insolence, was also turned into a group of stars and placed in the sky in the form of the constellation Orion, not far from the Pleiades. It turned out that now Orion is doomed to the end of time to unsuccessfully pursue the Pleiades across the sky.
The Pleiades are quite bright stars and were well known to ancient sailors, who often used them as guides. The origin from the Greek πλεîν (to navigate, to travel) is explained by the fact that the stars of the Pleiades are observed at night in the Mediterranean region from mid-May to early November – a period of active trade travel in ancient times. The Pleiades were considered the patroness of sailors, and their ascent in the spring was considered the beginning of the most favourable period for navigation.
“Joyfully the sail strained Odysseus and, with a fair wind
Trusting, I swam. Sitting at the stern and with a mighty hand
Turning the steering wheel, he was awake; sleep did not descend on him
And he did not take eyes away from the Pleiades, from the descending late in the Vaud Sea “

Плеяды — довольно яркие звёзды, и были хорошо известны древним мореходам, которые часто использовали их как путеводные. Происхождение от греческого πλεîν (мореходствовать, путешествовать) объясняется тем, что звёзды Плеяды наблюдаются по ночам в районе Средиземного моря с середины мая по начало ноября — период активных торговых путешествий в античные времена. Плеяды считались покровительницами моряков, а их восхождение весной считалось началом наиболее благоприятного периода для навигации.

Вверившись, поплыл. Сидя на корме и могучей рукою
Руль обращая, он бодрствовал; сон на его не спускался
Очи, и их не сводил он с Плеяд, с нисходящего поздно
в море Воота»
