Madurai is a major city and headquarters in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Madurai is the second largest city in terms of area and the third largest in terms of population in the state of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai has been one of the oldest and continuously developing cities in the world for over two millennia.
Madurai is closely related to the Tamil language and the third Tamil Sangam, the premier gathering of Tamil scholars, was held here. The history of the city dates back to the 3rd century BC, there is a mention of Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador to India and Kautilya and Mauryan minister under the Maurya Emperor Chandragupta. Signs of settlement and Roman trade links appeared in these areas from 300 BC and are evident from the excavations in India at Manaloor.
The city has a number of historical monuments such as Amman Meenakshi Temple and Tirumalai Nayak Palace which are considered to be the most famous. Madurai is an important industrial and educational center in South Tamil Nadu. The city is home to automotive, rubber, chemical, manufacturing and granite enterprises. Information technology is being developed here as the second tier of the city, some software companies have opened offices in Madurai. The Government of Tamil Nadu has planned the construction of a satellite city of Madurai near Thoppur.
Madurai has important public educational institutes such as a medical college, a homeopathic medical college, a college of law, an agricultural college and a research institute. The city of Madurai is administered by a municipal corporation established in 1971 under the Municipal Corporation Act. Madurai is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu after Chennai. The city covers an area of 242.97 km2 and has a population of 1,017,865 in 2011. The city is also the headquarters of the Madras High Court, one of the few courts outside the state capitals of India.
Meenakshi is also Angayarkanni is the avatar of the Hindu goddess Parvati consort of Shiva – worshiped mainly in South India. She is also one of the few female Hindu deities to have a temple built in her honor, known as Meenakshi’s Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. HER is considered as a form of the goddess Lalitha Tripurasundari, from the Dasa Maha Vidhyas legend.
